Despite budget deficits, Democrats, and a daughter like Patty Davis, Nancy and Ronald Reagan always seemed to have a regal glow. Part of the credit for that goes to Deborah Koepper, a White House stylist at the time, handling skincare and make-up for the poles and their visiting dignitaries. "Everyone was very nice," she says. "Nancy was a lady's lady."

Koepper's White House experience was a far cry from her roots. She spent much of her grandparents' farms in Maryland and Pennsylvania, where, among other things, she played with retired zoo animals like llamas and exotic birds. "I had success at a very young age. Then I realized I had to sit back and look at everything. I refer to that as building your cake. Washington was all the icing. I needed to build my cake. I needed to build me, my identity. That's what I've done down here [in Florida]."
